Grounded in Landscape: A Contemporary Rural Residence
Set within a rugged natural landscape, this contemporary rural residence designed by Toby Johnson of Johnstone Johnson Design Studio explores the relationship between architecture and its environment through a restrained material palette and carefully composed horizontal forms. The project emphasises calm spatial experiences, strong connections to the surrounding terrain, and an architectural language that feels both grounded and refined.
Rather than dominating the site, the house sits low within the landscape, allowing the surrounding vegetation, rock formations, and mature trees to remain the defining features of the environment.
A Low Horizontal Composition
The architecture is defined by a series of strong horizontal concrete planes that organise the structure and establish a clear visual rhythm across the site. These planes extend outward to create deep overhangs that shelter interior spaces while framing views toward the surrounding landscape.
The building’s low profile allows it to sit quietly within its rural context. Long rooflines and carefully proportioned volumes reinforce this horizontal character, allowing the house to feel embedded within the terrain rather than placed upon it.
Framing the Landscape
Large areas of glazing allow interior spaces to maintain a continuous visual connection with the surrounding landscape. Living areas open toward the garden and natural terrain, framing views of mature trees and distant scenery.
Rather than presenting a singular façade, the architecture unfolds gradually through a series of spaces that engage with different aspects of the site. This layered spatial approach allows occupants to experience the landscape from multiple vantage points throughout the home.
The landscape becomes an integral component of the architectural experience, constantly shifting with light, weather, and seasonal change.
A Restrained Material Palette
The project employs a limited selection of materials that reinforce the building’s relationship to the site. Exposed concrete provides structural clarity and durability, forming the primary architectural framework.
Dark metal cladding introduces contrast while allowing the building to visually recede into the landscape. Internally, warm timber finishes soften the structural elements and create a calm and tactile interior atmosphere.
This restrained material palette ensures the architecture remains timeless while allowing the natural surroundings to remain visually dominant.
Interior Spaces Defined by Light and Shelter
The interior spaces prioritise openness and clarity. Living areas are organised around framed views and carefully controlled daylight, creating environments that feel both expansive and intimate.
Deep roof overhangs provide protection from direct sunlight while allowing natural light to filter into the interior. These architectural elements also create sheltered outdoor areas that extend the living spaces beyond the building envelope.
The resulting spatial experience balances openness with a sense of enclosure and comfort.
Architecture as a Quiet Intervention
The design approach emphasises restraint, allowing the house to exist as a quiet intervention within its rural setting. The architecture does not compete with the landscape; instead, it frames and enhances it.
Through its careful proportions, limited material palette, and strong relationship with the site, the residence demonstrates how contemporary architecture can respond thoughtfully to natural environments.
The result is a home that feels deeply connected to its surroundings—an architecture defined not only by its form, but by the landscape it inhabits.
