Nestled within the textured urban fabric of Bronte’s prized coastal enclave, the Cross Street House by Johnstone & Johnson reinterprets the classic Sydney beachside residence through a subtle yet confident architectural gesture. Situated between intimate streetscapes and expansive ocean horizons, the design responds with a careful choreography of light, materiality and spatial layering that aligns interior living with its dynamic external context. The project manifests as a thoughtful alterations & additions to an existing dwelling, expanding and refining its spatial qualities without overpowering the neighbourhood’s scale and character. The composition articulates a series of interlocking volumes and voids that modulate views, privacy and natural light, forging a seamless flow between indoor spaces and the coastal environment. The strategic placement of openings and plane shifts invites dappled sunlight deep into the plan, while framing glimpses of greenery and sky. A restrained palette of materials, harmonising texture, warmth and durability, anchors the home in its seaside setting, articulating a contemporary sensibility that remains grounded in place. Through its refined proportion and considered detailing, Cross Street House exemplifies a modern residential architecture that is both contextually respectful and spatially generous, enhancing everyday life with clarity and poise.
